Preparations for the 2009 choir are underway. Dr. Jonathan Reed, our clinician for the ’09 All-OMEA Chorus, hails from Michigan State University, where he conducts the State Singers, the Men’s Glee Club and teaches courses in conducting at both the undergraduate and graduate level.  In addition, he supervises the directed teaching experiences of undergraduate choral education majors. In 1999, the Associated Students of MSU presented him with the Outstanding Faculty Award.

Reed is active as an adjudicator and clinician, conducting festivals and All-OMEA choruses throughout the United States. Most recently he conducted the all–state choruses in Tennessee, Virginia, Texas, and Indiana, as well as honor choirs for the Northwest and Western Divisions of ACDA. His choirs have performed at divisional and national conferences of ACDA. He has presented interest sessions at two national conferences of ACDA
Reed has also served ACDA as editor of the state newsletter, state president, and divisional and national chair of the Repertoire and Standards committee on Male Chorus.

The program Dr. Reed has chosen includes:

    Oxford University Press, W154

The audition selections for the 2009 All-OMEA choir are:

Gloria from The Masque of Angels by Dominick Argento
    (SATB) Boosey & Hawkes, #48003801

    (SATB) E C Schirmer, #5135

In Pace, In Idipsum Dormiam et Requiescam,
    by John Sheppard (SATB) www.cpdl.org

The Sheppard selection is a Renaissance piece that appears on the public domain web site and is a free download.  You may make as many copies as you wish. When you arrive at the www.cpdl.org web site, type only the first two words of the title (In Pace) in the Search box. Click “Search”. Scroll down to Sheppard’s work and click on the title.  Ignore the yellow “Error Summary,” and click on the pdf icon after the CPDL #395.  The piece will appear in its entirety.
Written dynamic markings were rare in Renaissance music. Most often the text determined the dynamics.  Since dynamics comprise one of our scoring categories, it is important to know how to teach the piece from that perspective.  Reed has prepared a dynamic scheme for this selection, and it will be available on the OMEA web site in the near future.  The tempo markings suggested by the conductor differ from those printed on the score. The new tempos will be reflected on the rehearsal CDs. Approximations are as follows:  Letter A quarter note = 60; Letter B quarter note = 138; Letter C quarter note = 60.  Of course, this selection will be molded and shaded carefully by Reed at the rehearsals in January.
