INFORMATION FOR THE 2014 ALL-STATE JAZZ ENSEMBLE (2012 auditions)

Here is the information for the 2013-2014 state jazz tryout

Prepared piece horns, guitar, piano, bass and vibes:

Étude 1 from from Etudes for the developing Jazz Musician, by Will Campbell (Stone Mill Publishing, www.stonmillmusic.com). 

 

Prepared piece for drummers

"Count Bubba's Revenge" (Demo 1 track 4) from The Music of Gordon Goodwin Play along Series Vol 4. Alfred Jazz (www.alfred.com)

Drummers will also play sixteen bars of each of the following styles: funk at 110 bpm, swing at 110bpm, double-time swing at 220 bpm, double-time swing trading fours (four bars of time/ four bars of solo) at 220 bpm, samba at 220 bpm and jazz waltz at 220 bpm. Drummers will play each sixteen bar phrase in the prescribed order as one continuous etude and after a short pause play eight bars of swing ballad with brushes at 80 bpm.

 

We will provide a drum set. Students who want to use their own drum sets need to set up in the band room by 8:00 AM on the day of the audition.

Sight-reading:

All students will sight-read following their prepared audition piece.

Improvisation:

An optional improvisation audition can add up to five additional points to the overall score. Interested students will play two twelve-bar blues choruses in the key of F. The accompaniment source for the audition is from Nothing but Blues, track #10 (Jamey Aebersold, Inc.) This separate audition is optional but strongly encouraged.
Trombones and Rhythm Section:


 A bass trombonist will be selected from the top five trombone auditions. The selected rhythm section for the jazz ensemble will also perform with the All-OCDA High School Jazz Chorus at the OCDA conference the week before our OMEA conference in January.

The date for the tryout is November 23, 2013. Midwest City High School.
