All- State Jazz Auditions 2016 (for 2017 Ensemble)
The date for auditions for the 2017 All–State Jazz Ensemble is November 19, 2016, at Midwest City High School.
All-OMEA Audition Application Deadlines:
September 17, 2016 ($15.00)
September 24, 2016 (triple fee, $45.00)
September 25, 2016 (emergency entry fee $100)

Prepared audition selection for horns, guitar, piano, bass and vibes:
Etude No. 1 from Etudes for the Developing Jazz Musician, by Will Campbell (Stonemill Music www.stonemillmusic.com)
Prepared selection for drummers:
Count Bubba’s Revenge (Demo Track 1, Play-Along Track 4) from the Gordon Goodwin Play-Along Series Volume 4
Drummers will also play sixteen bars each of the following styles:
Funk at 110 bpm; Swing at 110 bpm; Double–Time Swing at 220 bpm; Double–Time Swing Trading Fours (four bars of time, four bars of solo) at 220 bpm; Samba at 220 bpm; and Jazz Waltz at 220 bpm; Drummers will play each sixteen–bar phrase in prescribed order, as one continuous etude, then after a short pause, play eight bars of swing ballad with brushes at 80 bpm.
The auditions site will provide a drum set. Students who want to use their own drum sets need to set–up in the band room by 8:00 AM on the day of the audition.
All Students will sight-read following their prepared audition.
An optional improvisation audition can add up to five additional points to the overall score. Interested students will play two, twelve-bar blues choruses in the key of F. The accompaniment source for the audition is fromMaiden Voyage, vol. 54, track #10 Tootsie (Jamey Aebersold, Inc., www. Jazzbooks.com) This separate audition is optional but strongly encouraged.
Students who try out for lead trumpet must be in the top five trumpet scores to make the band.
The committee will select a bass trombonist from the top five auditions.
OCDA Choir Rhythm Section:
The selected rhythm section for the jazz ensemble will also perform for the All-OCDA High School Jazz Chorus at the OCDA conference, held the week before OkMEA conference in January
